ROMANS - Recap

CALL TO WORSHIP

Praise be to you, LORD, from everlasting to everlasting.

Yours, LORD, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the majesty and the splendour, for everything in heaven and earth is yours.

Yours, LORD, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all. Wealth and honour come from you; you are the ruler of all things.

In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all.

Now, our God, we give you thanks, and praise your glorious name.

(1 Chronicles 29:10-13)

Song: Jesus is the Lord of All

Song: How Great is Our God

We've already heard that God is the ruler of all the earth. We've sung that Jesus is the lord of all, and yet so often our hearts wander and desire to bow down to other masters. Rather than trusting God's sovereignty, we seek to become the kings and rulers of our own lives. We don't give Jesus lordship over our lives, instead we let other things rule us and make them our priority instead. Why don't you take a moment to reflect on that now, and confess to God where you see this tendency in your own heart...

Father God, forgive us for failing to trust you and your sovereignty in our lives. Reveal the parts of our lives where we are slow to give you control. Help us to see that your plans and purposes are greater than ours and would we know the peace that comes from trusting in you. Amen

The truth of the gospel is that there is forgiveness for us to be received through faith in Jesus. In putting our trust in him, we can know freedom from all our sin through his gift of grace. Let's sing out about this offer of grace together now.

Song: Come Ye Sinners Poor and Needy

PASSING OF THE PEACE

PREACHING OF THE WORD

This week we were back in our Romans sermon series, Gary Aston preached to us from Romans 9:1-5 . Click here to listen to that sermon.

COMMUNION

Every week we want to respond to what God has done for us in Jesus. One of the great ways he has provided for us to remember the truth of the gospel is giving us communion. As we take the bread and wine we remember what Jesus has done for us.

POST COMMUNION READING

Jesus’ death brings us life and this meal reminds us that we are fed by Jesus and forgiven because of Jesus.

We rejoice that You have died, rose again, and are now with the Father advocating for us. Amen.

With our money, time, and talent we give generously, knowing that through Your Son, Jesus, You have generously given to us.

We rejoice that You have given everything and we joyfully give everything back to Your care. Amen.

Song: There is a Fountain

Song: See the Lamb

COMMITMENT READING

Jesus is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. By him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, all things were created through him and for him.

He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead. So he is first in everything.

(Colossians 1:15-18)

Song: The Lion and the Lamb

BENEDICTION

God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light. To him be honour and might forever. Amen

(1 Timothy 6:15-16)

Peace be with you.

And also with you.

ROMANS - Unbreakable

CALL TO WORSHIP

Praise the LORD! Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures for ever! Who can utter the mighty deeds of the LORD, or declare all his praise?

I will remember the deeds of the LORD; I will remember your wonderful deeds of long ago. I will ponder all your work, and meditate on your mighty deeds.

Your way, O God, is holy. What god is great like our God? You are the God who works wonders;you have made known your might among the peoples.

(Based on Psalm 77 and 106)

Song: O God of our Salvation

Song: How Great is Our God

Before a Holy God, we’re small, we’re weak, and we’re in need of mercy. We’re far from holy, far from perfect, and we’re burdened with uncountable flaws and weaknesses. We've all fallen short of God's standard and yet there is hope for us in our sin. Hear this reminder that through Jesus we have been made right with God, despite our sin and failures. Join with me in the underlined portions.

For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Yet God, with undeserved kindness, declares that we are righteous.

He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin.

We are made right with God through faith in Jesus Christ and we are justified by his gift of grace.

(Based on Romans 3:22-26)

Song: Forgiven

PASSING OF THE PEACE

PREACHING OF THE WORD

This week Gary Aston preached to us the last in our Romans series for a while from Romans 8:28-39. Click here to listen to that sermon.

Song: How Deep the Father’s Love

Song: O God

COMMITMENT READING

In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(Romans 8:37-39)

Song: Man of Sorrows

BENEDICTION

(May) Christ dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Peace be with you.

And also with you.

ROMANS - Groaning & Glory

SERMON

Gary Aston will be preaching to us from Romans 8:18-30 this Sunday as we think about the groaning we can experience as we feel the effects of sin and the glory that is ours in Christ.

LITURGY

COMMITMENT READING

Brothers and sisters, let us not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.

For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.

So let us fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

(2 Corinthians 4:16-18)

MUSIC

  • O God of Mercy Hear Our Plea (Sovereign Grace): A song that pleads with God to hear our prayers as we join in creations groaning for Jesus to return.

  • How Great Thou Art: A hymn that sings of the glory of God seen in his creation.
