SUNDAY GATHERING (26th July 2020)

PILGRIM SONGS - THE SONGS OF ASCENT [PSALM 123]

During this time where our public gatherings are not able to meet, each Sunday we are providing you with a liturgy that you can use at home. You can use it in a number of ways: on your own, with your family, or with others from our church community via video conferencing. Our suggestion is that you take time to move through each of the sections below, listening to the songs, reflecting on the liturgy and hearing the word preached exactly as we do on a Sunday. As you move through it why not talk with others or, if you are on your own, message someone from your City Group or DNA Group to share something that really struck you.

As you do this remember that we are still the church even when we can’t gather together as the church.

CALL TO WORSHIP

One of the wonderful experiences of listening to a great song, reading a great poem or watching great film is that we find someone else expressing a truth that we have felt but lacked the words to say. As we hear or read it we say ‘that’s exactly what I feel too’ and their words help us to express our feelings. Well in the bible God has given us words to express our praise and worship of him. Over and over again as we read the bible we find ourselves saying ‘that’s exactly what I feel’. That means we don’t have to be eloquent, we don’t all need to be poets to find the right words to praise God. He gives us words that can express our praise. So use these words from [Psalm 36] and as you say them make them your very own.

Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies. Your righteousness is like the highest mountains, your justice like the great deep. You, Lord, preserve both people and animals. How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings. They feast on the abundance of your house; you give them drink from your river of delights. For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light.

[Psalm 36:5-9]

CONFESSION AND ASSURANCE

The gospel offers us the great hope that our salvation does not rest on our good works and performance but instead is by God’s free grace. We take hold of that grace through repentance and faith and we rejoice that God is gracious and merciful. Our great hope is that, in Jesus, God gives us this invite:

“Turn to me and be saved, all you ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other.”

[Is 45:22]

But we never stop needing to turn to God in repentance and faith. We never stop needing to confess our sin and live out the truth of who we are through faith in Jesus. Use this prayer as you take time to confess your sin today.

Father, make me a chief repenter. Let me be the first to admit my fault, and to repent quickly- without grudging, without excuses, without bitterness. Help me to know that repentance is a path through grief to greater joy.

Amen

[Prayer taken from The Way of Wisdom, by Tim & Kathy Keller]

SONG: Lead us Back (Sojourn): A song of confession that we so often seek security, comfort and the worship of other idols above God. A plea that God would lead us back to life in him.

PASSING OF THE PEACE

Because of Christ's work on the cross, his death and resurrection, we have been brought back into communion with our God and have been made righteous. We have peace with our creator, our heavenly Father and the Holy Spirit unites us together in Jesus.

We normally express that peace with one another in our gatherings by greeting those around us. In this time where we can’t do that take a moment to pray for someone who is part of our church family instead.

SERMON Pilgrim Songs- [Psalm 123] Watch the pre-sermon message and then the sermon.

This week we’re continuing in our new series entitled ‘Pilgrim Songs’. Click here where you will find this week’s sermon.

RESPONSE

Take a few minutes to reflect on how God was speaking to you from his Word. Ask that the Holy Spirit would take the truth and use it to change and transform you.

SONG: Nothing but the Blood of Jesus: A song that reflects on the cleansing and purification from sins we can know because of the blood Jesus shed on our behalf.

LYRICS

What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

O precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow;
No other fount I know;
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

For my pardon this I see:
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
For my cleansing this my plea:
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

O precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow;
No other fount I know;
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Nothing can for sin atone:
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
Naught of good that I have done:
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

O precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow;
No other fount I know;
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

This is all my hope and peace:
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
This is all my righteousness:
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

O precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow;
No other fount I know;
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

O precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow;
No other fount I know;
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

COMMITMENT READING

Let’s prepare to end this time of worship by reminding ourselves of where we should fix our eyes as we set out into a new week:

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

[Hebrews 12:1-2]

PILGRIM SONGS - THE SONGS OF ASCENT [PSALM 122]

During this time where our public gatherings are not able to meet, each Sunday we are providing you with a liturgy that you can use at home. You can use it in a number of ways: on your own, with your family, or with others from our church community via video conferencing. Our suggestion is that you take time to move through each of the sections below, listening to the songs, reflecting on the liturgy and hearing the word preached exactly as we do on a Sunday. As you do this remember that we are still the church even when we can’t gather together as the church.

CALL TO WORSHIP

When we turn our hearts to the praise and worship of God it is good to remember that we are not alone. We’re not alone in that through faith in Jesus we are united to millions all around the world who worship God. But we’re also not alone in the sense that creation itself pours out praise. The world belongs to God and therefore speaks of his greatness. So when we praise and worship we are taking our place in the great symphony of praise that goes up every moment of every day. Let Psalm 19 draw you into that symphony today:

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.

[Psalm 19:1-10]

CONFESSION AND ASSURANCE

As we hear and sing of the glory and majesty of God, we are humbled before him. When we see his holiness we are reminded of our brokenness. We become aware of the sin that separates us from God and means that on our own we have no hope of living up to his standard. Each week we take a moment to confess our sin before God, to come before him in humility. Use this prayer as you take time to confess today.

Lord, may we have the eyes to see your holiness and see our failing. May we know the depths of our sin and the heights of your holiness. Forgive us for sinning against you, and forgive us for sinning against one another. Through the blood of Jesus, we plead for mercy and grace, knowing that because of Jesus, you welcome and forgive sinners like us. It's through his name we ask all these things,

Amen.

COMMITMENT READING

In the psalms of ascent the theme of pilgrimage in the Christian life is brought into clear focus. Like those first pilgrims, we are all on a journey of faith that will end when Christ returns and ushers in the new creation in all its glory. As we look forward to this great hope, Jesus gives us his peace to rest in and comfort us in this life now.

Hear his words of assurance:

‘Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.’

[John 14:27]

SONG: In Christ Alone: A glorious reminder that it is only in Christ that our hope can be found. In him our sin has been taken away, we are free from the grip of death and we stand secure.

SUNDAY GATHERING (12th July 2020)

Pilgrim Songs - The Songs of Ascent [Psalm 120]

During this time where our public gatherings are not able to meet, each Sunday we are providing you with a liturgy that you can use at home. You can use it in a number of ways: on your own, with your family, or with others from our church community via video conferencing. As you do this remember that we are still the church even when we can’t gather together as the church.

CALL TO WORSHIP

So often we feel our own strength to be small and our own resources to be limited. It might be that you feel that today as you think about the week that has passed and the week that is ahead. But the bible constantly points us to look to God and the strength that is found in him. But we need to do that day by day and moment by moment. So start your time of worship today by anchoring your heart in the constant faithfulness of God:

The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

"The LORD is my portion," says my soul, "therefore I will hope in him." Great is your faithfulness. The LORD is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. Great is your faithfulness.

(Based on Lamentations 3:22-25)

God is good and God is faithful. In Jesus he draws us into a deep relationship where we get to experience his power and love towards us. Let those truths stir your heart to sing.

CONFESSION AND ASSURANCE

When we're reminded of God's character and that he is the one who brings salvation, we are reminded how often we are quick to forget this. We begin to believe that it is our work and merit that make us right with God. When we do that we take the cross for granted and fail to give God the glory and thanksgiving he deserves. So take a moment in the quiet of your heart to confess that to God now. Confess the ways this week you have been resting on your own goodness and achievement.

One of the joys of we have together as God's people is that, when we forget God's truth, we can remind one another and encourage one another with it together. We can preach the gospel- the good news of what God has done for us in Jesus- again to one another. So let these words of assurance comfort your heart:

For it is by grace we have been saved, through faith and this is not from ourselves, it is the gift of God not by works, so that none of us can boast.

(Ephesians 2:8-9)

SONG: Grace Alone (Kings Kaleidoscope): A song celebrating the grace shown to us in Christ. A reminder that it is only by grace we're saved.

LYRICS

I was an orphan lost at the fall Running away when I'd hear you call
But Father you worked your will
I had no righteousness of my own
I had no right to draw near your throne
But Father you loved me still

And in love before you laid the world's foundation
You predestined to adopt me as your own
You have raised me up so high above my station
I'm a child of God by grace and grace alone

You left your home to seek out the lost
You knew the great and terrible cost
But Jesus your face was set
I worked my fingers down to the bone
But nothing I did could ever atone
But Jesus you paid my debt

By Your blood I have redemption and salvation
Lord you died that I might reap what you have sown
And you rose that I might be a new creation
I am born again by grace and grace alone

I was in darkness all of my life
I never knew the day from the night
But Spirit you made me see
I swore I knew the way on my own
Head full of rocks a heart made of stone
But Spirit you moved in me

And at your touch my sleeping spirit was awakened
On my darkened heart the light of Christ has shone
Called into a kingdom that cannot be shaken
Heaven's citizen by grace and grace alone

So I'll stand in faith by grace and grace alone
I will run the race by grace and grace alone
I will slay my sin by grace and grace alone
I will reach the end by grace and grace alone

SONG: There is a Fountain: A song with graphic imagery that reminds us of the lengths Jesus went to save us from our sin, the blood that was shed on our behalf.

LYRICS

There is a fountain filled with blood
Drawn from Immanuel's veins
And sinners plunged beneath that flood
Lose all their guilty stains
Lose all their guilty stains
Lose all their guilty stains
And sinners plunged beneath that flood
Lose all their guilty stains

The dying thief rejoiced to see
That fountain in his day
And there may I though vile as he
Wash all my sins away
Wash all my sins away
Wash all my sins away
And there may I though vile as he
Wash all my sins away

Dear dying Lamb Thy precious blood
Shall never lose its pow'r
Till all the ransomed Church of God
Be saved to sin no more
Be saved to sin no more
Be saved to sin no more
Till all the ransomed Church of God
Be saved to sin no more

E'er since by faith I saw the stream
Thy flowing wounds supply
Redeeming love has been my theme
And shall be till I die
And shall be till I die
And shall be till I die
Redeeming love has been my theme
And shall be till I die

When this poor lisping stamm'ring tongue
Lies silent in the grave
Then in a nobler sweeter song
I'll sing Thy pow'r to save
I'll sing Thy pow'r to save
I'll sing Thy pow'r to save
Then in a nobler sweeter song
I'll sing Thy pow'r to save

THE GOSPEL OF MARK [MARK 2:23-3:6]

During this time where our public gatherings are not able to meet, each Sunday we are providing you with a liturgy that you can use at home. You can use it in a number of ways: on your own, with your family, or with others from our church community via video conferencing. CALL TO WORSHIP

One of the glorious truths that anchors our hearts and orientates our lives as Christians is that God is glorious. He is eternal and unchanging- worthy of all our praise. Use this call to worship to remind your heart of the goodness and greatness of God.

Praise be to you, LORD, from everlasting to everlasting. Yours, LORD, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the majesty and the splendour, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, LORD, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all. Wealth and honour come from you; you are the ruler of all things. In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all. Now, our God, we give you thanks, and praise your glorious name.

CONFESSION AND ASSURANCE

As we take a moment to confess our sin before God use this prayer to help you:

Father God as we are reminded of your glory and majesty, we confess that so often we forget how far we are from you. We are quick to build ourselves up and quick to look down on others. Forgive us for judging one another, thinking we are better than one another. Remind us that all of us have sinned and fallen short of your standards. We are all undeserving of your grace and yet you have lavishly poured it onto us.

Amen.

Even though we deserved God's judgement, Jesus took the judgement that was ours on the cross so that we might be freed from the power of sin. God tells us in his word that if we repent and turn to Jesus, we find life. Read these words of assurance about our great and perfect saviour now:

"He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth." When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. "He himself bore our sins" in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live for righteousness; "by his wounds we have been healed."

(1 Peter 2:22-24)

Jesus secures our forgiveness and we can know deep and true healing from our sin. Let the joy of that rest on your heart as you sing.

Through what Jesus has done for us we have a new and wonderful identity. It is so important that we remember that during this time when we can’t gather together as the church. So prepare to close your time of worship with this reminder of who we are as God’s people:

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

[1 Pt 2:9]

SONG: Hear the Call of the Kingdom (Stuart Townend & Keith Getty): A song which calls us to lift our eyes to God, and to go to all the world with his compassion, as well as being a reminder of our place as his children.

LYRICS

Hear the call of the kingdom

Lift your eyes to the King
Let His song rise within you
As a fragrant offering
Of how God rich in mercy came in Christ to redeem
All who trust in His unfailing grace

Verse 2

Hear the call of the kingdom
To be children of light
With the mercy of heaven the humility of Christ
Walking justly before Him
Loving all that is right
That the life of Christ may shine through us

King of heaven we will answer the call
We will follow bringing hope to the world
Filled with passion filled with power to proclaim
Salvation in Jesus' name

Hear the call of the kingdom
To reach out to the lost
With the Father's compassion
In the wonder of the cross
Bringing peace and forgiveness
And a hope yet to come
Let the nations put their trust in Him

King of heaven we will answer the call
We will follow bringing hope to the world
Filled with passion filled with power to proclaim
Salvation in Jesus' name
